frysk packages through 2008-08-05 as shipped in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 are built with an insecure RPATH set in the ELF header of multiple binaries in /usr/bin/f* (e.g. fcore, fcatch, fstack, fstep, …) shipped in the package. A local attacker can exploit this vulnerability by running arbitrary code as another user.

Weakness

The product initializes or sets a resource with a default that is intended to be changed by the administrator, but the default is not secure.

Affected Software

Name Vendor Start Version End Version
Frysk Redhat * 2008-08-05 (including)

Extended Description

Developers often choose default values that leave the product as open and easy to use as possible out-of-the-box, under the assumption that the administrator can (or should) change the default value. However, this ease-of-use comes at a cost when the default is insecure and the administrator does not change it.
