The default event handling scripts in Automatic Bug Reporting Tool (ABRT) allow local users to gain privileges as demonstrated by a symlink attack on a var_log_messages file.

Weakness

The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource.

Affected Software

Name Vendor Start Version End Version
Automatic_bug_reporting_tool Redhat - (including) - (including)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 RedHat abrt-0:2.0.8-26.el6_6.1 *
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 RedHat libreport-0:2.0.9-21.el6_6.1 *
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 RedHat abrt-0:2.1.11-22.el7_1 *

Potential Mitigations

  • Follow the principle of least privilege when assigning access rights to entities in a software system.
  • Denying access to a file can prevent an attacker from replacing that file with a link to a sensitive file. Ensure good compartmentalization in the system to provide protected areas that can be trusted.
