A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Microsoft COM for Windows when it fails to properly handle serialized objects, aka Microsoft COM for Windows Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This affects Windows 7, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows RT 8.1, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2012, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 10, Windows 10 Servers.

Weakness

The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently ensuring that the resulting data will be valid.

Potential Mitigations

  • Make fields transient to protect them from deserialization.
  • An attempt to serialize and then deserialize a class containing transient fields will result in NULLs where the transient data should be. This is an excellent way to prevent time, environment-based, or sensitive variables from being carried over and used improperly.
