Incorrect parsing of certain JSON input may result in js-bson not correctly serializing BSON. This may cause unexpected application behaviour including data disclosure. This issue affects: MongoDB Inc. js-bson library version 1.1.3 and prior to.

Weakness

The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently ensuring that the resulting data will be valid.

Affected Software

NameVendorStart VersionEnd Version
Js-bsonMongodb*1.1.4 (excluding)
Node-mongodbUbuntueoan*
Node-mongodbUbuntufocal*
Node-mongodbUbuntutrusty*

Potential Mitigations

  • Make fields transient to protect them from deserialization.
  • An attempt to serialize and then deserialize a class containing transient fields will result in NULLs where the transient data should be. This is an excellent way to prevent time, environment-based, or sensitive variables from being carried over and used improperly.
