A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services when it incorrectly handles page requests, aka Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Remote Code Execution Vulnerability.

Weakness

The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently ensuring that the resulting data will be valid.

Affected Software

NameVendorStart VersionEnd Version
Sql_serverMicrosoft2012-sp4 (including)2012-sp4 (including)
Sql_serverMicrosoft2014-sp3 (including)2014-sp3 (including)
Sql_serverMicrosoft2016-sp2 (including)2016-sp2 (including)

Potential Mitigations

  • Make fields transient to protect them from deserialization.
  • An attempt to serialize and then deserialize a class containing transient fields will result in NULLs where the transient data should be. This is an excellent way to prevent time, environment-based, or sensitive variables from being carried over and used improperly.
