phpMussel from versions 1.0.0 and less than 1.6.0 has an unserialization vulnerability in PHPs phar wrapper. Uploading a specially crafted file to an affected version allows arbitrary code execution (discovered, tested, and confirmed by myself), so the risk factor should be regarded as very high. Newer phpMussel versions dont use PHPs phar wrapper, and are therefore unaffected. This has been fixed in version 1.6.0.

Weakness

The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently ensuring that the resulting data will be valid.

Affected Software

Name Vendor Start Version End Version
Phpmussel Phpmussel_project 1.0.0 (including) 1.6.0 (excluding)

Potential Mitigations

  • Make fields transient to protect them from deserialization.
  • An attempt to serialize and then deserialize a class containing transient fields will result in NULLs where the transient data should be. This is an excellent way to prevent time, environment-based, or sensitive variables from being carried over and used improperly.
