IBM WebSphere Application Server 7.0, 8.0, 8.5, and 9.0 traditional could allow a remote attacker to obtain sensitive information with a specially-crafted sequence of serialized objects. IBM X-Force ID: 181230.

Weakness

The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently ensuring that the resulting data will be valid.

Affected Software

NameVendorStart VersionEnd Version
Websphere_application_serverIbm7.0.0.0 (including)7.0.0.45 (including)
Websphere_application_serverIbm8.0.0.0 (including)8.0.0.15 (including)
Websphere_application_serverIbm8.5.0.0 (including)8.5.5.17 (including)
Websphere_application_serverIbm9.0.0.0 (including)9.0.5.4 (including)

Potential Mitigations

  • Make fields transient to protect them from deserialization.
  • An attempt to serialize and then deserialize a class containing transient fields will result in NULLs where the transient data should be. This is an excellent way to prevent time, environment-based, or sensitive variables from being carried over and used improperly.
