IBM WebSphere Application Server 7.0, 8.0, 8.5, and 9.0 traditional could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on a system with a specially-crafted sequence of serialized objects over the SOAP connector. IBM X-Force ID: 181489.

Weakness

The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently ensuring that the resulting data will be valid.

Affected Software

Name Vendor Start Version End Version
Websphere_application_server Ibm 7.0.0.0 (including) 7.0.0.45 (including)
Websphere_application_server Ibm 8.0.0.0 (including) 8.0.0.15 (including)
Websphere_application_server Ibm 8.5.0.0 (including) 8.5.5.17 (including)
Websphere_application_server Ibm 9.0.0.0 (including) 9.0.5.4 (including)

Potential Mitigations

  • Make fields transient to protect them from deserialization.
  • An attempt to serialize and then deserialize a class containing transient fields will result in NULLs where the transient data should be. This is an excellent way to prevent time, environment-based, or sensitive variables from being carried over and used improperly.
