All versions of bson before 1.1.4 are vulnerable to Deserialization of Untrusted Data. The package will ignore an unknown value for an objects _bsotype, leading to cases where an object is serialized as a document rather than the intended BSON type.

Weakness

The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently ensuring that the resulting data will be valid.

Affected Software

NameVendorStart VersionEnd Version
BsonMongodb1.0.0 (including)1.1.4 (excluding)
Node-mongodbUbuntueoan*
Node-mongodbUbuntufocal*
Node-mongodbUbuntutrusty*
Node-mongodbUbuntuupstream*

Potential Mitigations

  • Make fields transient to protect them from deserialization.
  • An attempt to serialize and then deserialize a class containing transient fields will result in NULLs where the transient data should be. This is an excellent way to prevent time, environment-based, or sensitive variables from being carried over and used improperly.
