Cilium is open source software for providing and securing network connectivity and loadbalancing between application workloads. Cilium prior to versions 1.9.16, 1.10.11, and 1.11.15 contains an incorrect default permissions vulnerability. Operating Systems with users belonging to the group ID 1000 can access the API of Cilium via Unix domain socket available on the host where Cilium is running. This could allow malicious users to compromise integrity as well as system availability on that host. The problem has been fixed and the patch is available in versions 1.9.16, 1.10.11, and 1.11.5. A potential workaround is to modify Ciliums DaemonSet to run with a certain command, which can be found in the GitHub Security Advisory for this vulnerability.

Weakness

During installation, installed file permissions are set to allow anyone to modify those files.

Affected Software

Name Vendor Start Version End Version
Cilium Cilium * 1.9.16 (excluding)
Cilium Cilium 1.10.0 (including) 1.10.11 (excluding)
Cilium Cilium 1.11.0 (including) 1.11.5 (excluding)

Potential Mitigations

  • Compartmentalize the system to have “safe” areas where trust boundaries can be unambiguously drawn. Do not allow sensitive data to go outside of the trust boundary and always be careful when interfacing with a compartment outside of the safe area.
  • Ensure that appropriate compartmentalization is built into the system design, and the compartmentalization allows for and reinforces privilege separation functionality. Architects and designers should rely on the principle of least privilege to decide the appropriate time to use privileges and the time to drop privileges.
