Mattermost Server versions 9.5.x before 9.5.2, 9.4.x before 9.4.4, 9.3.x before 9.3.3, 8.1.x before 8.1.11 dont limit the number of user preferences which allows an attacker to send a large number of user preferences potentially causing denial of service.

Weakness

The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource.

Affected Software

Name Vendor Start Version End Version
Mattermost_server Mattermost 8.1.0 (including) 8.1.11 (excluding)
Mattermost_server Mattermost 9.3.0 (including) 9.3.3 (excluding)
Mattermost_server Mattermost 9.4.0 (including) 9.4.4 (excluding)
Mattermost_server Mattermost 9.5.0 (including) 9.5.2 (excluding)

Potential Mitigations

  • Mitigation of resource exhaustion attacks requires that the target system either:

  • The first of these solutions is an issue in itself though, since it may allow attackers to prevent the use of the system by a particular valid user. If the attacker impersonates the valid user, they may be able to prevent the user from accessing the server in question.

  • The second solution is simply difficult to effectively institute – and even when properly done, it does not provide a full solution. It simply makes the attack require more resources on the part of the attacker.
