SAP NetWeaver and ABAP platform allows an attacker to impede performance for legitimate users by crashing or flooding the service.

An impact of this Denial of Service vulnerability might be long response delays and service interruptions, thus degrading the service quality experienced by legitimate users causing high impact on availability of the application.

Weakness

The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource.

Affected Software

Name Vendor Start Version End Version
Netweaver_application_server_abap Sap 740 (including) 740 (including)
Netweaver_application_server_abap Sap 2008_1_710 (including) 2008_1_710 (including)
Netweaver_application_server_abap Sap st-pi_2008_1_700 (including) st-pi_2008_1_700 (including)

Potential Mitigations

  • Mitigation of resource exhaustion attacks requires that the target system either:

  • The first of these solutions is an issue in itself though, since it may allow attackers to prevent the use of the system by a particular valid user. If the attacker impersonates the valid user, they may be able to prevent the user from accessing the server in question.

  • The second solution is simply difficult to effectively institute – and even when properly done, it does not provide a full solution. It simply makes the attack require more resources on the part of the attacker.
