A Denial of Service (DoS) condition has been discovered in GitLab CE/EE affecting all versions from 7.10 prior before 16.11.5, version 17.0 before 17.0.3, and 17.1 before 17.1.1. It is possible for an attacker to cause a denial of service using a crafted markdown page.

Weakness

The product uses a regular expression with an inefficient, possibly exponential worst-case computational complexity that consumes excessive CPU cycles.

Affected Software

Name Vendor Start Version End Version
Gitlab Gitlab 7.10.0 (including) 16.11.5 (excluding)
Gitlab Gitlab 17.0.0 (including) 17.0.3 (excluding)
Gitlab Gitlab 17.1.0 (including) 17.1.0 (including)
Gitlab Ubuntu esm-apps/xenial *

Extended Description

Attackers can create crafted inputs that
intentionally cause the regular expression to use
excessive backtracking in a way that causes the CPU
	  consumption to spike.
