A security vulnerability has been detected in wonderwhy-er DesktopCommanderMCP up to 0.2.13. This vulnerability affects the function isPathAllowed of the file src/tools/filesystem.ts. The manipulation leads to symlink following. The attack can only be performed from a local environment. The attacks complexity is rated as high. It is stated that the exploitability is difficult. The exploit has been disclosed publicly and may be used. The vendor explains: Our restriction features are designed as guardrails for LLMs to help them stay closer to what users want, rather than hardened security boundaries. (…) For users where security is a top priority, we continue to recommend using Desktop Commander with Docker, which provides actual isolation. (…) Well keep this issue open for future consideration if we receive more user demand for improved restrictions. This vulnerability only affects products that are no longer supported by the maintainer.

Weakness

The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource.

Potential Mitigations

  • Follow the principle of least privilege when assigning access rights to entities in a software system.
  • Denying access to a file can prevent an attacker from replacing that file with a link to a sensitive file. Ensure good compartmentalization in the system to provide protected areas that can be trusted.
