A denial of service vulnerability was found in GStreamers AV1 codec parser in gst-plugins-bad. The gst_av1_parser_parse_tile_list_obu() function passes a byte count to a bit-reader API that expects a bit count, causing parser desynchronization. A remote attacker could trick a user into opening a specially crafted AV1 media file, triggering an assertion abort and causing the application to crash.

Extended Description
While assertion is good for catching logic errors and reducing the chances of reaching more serious vulnerability conditions, it can still lead to a denial of service. For example, if a server handles multiple simultaneous connections, and an assert() occurs in one single connection that causes all other connections to be dropped, this is a reachable assertion that leads to a denial of service.
